Entry Malagasikara
Part of speech name (toponym) [full list]
Explanations in English There is a likelihood that the name of the great island of the Indian Ocean was initially Malagasikara, and was erroneously changed to Madagascar. Several old texts point to that direction.
  1. In 1699, the Calendar of State Papers records the testimomy of a certain Captain Shelly who brought into New York's harbour 80 or 90 passengers from Malagaskar :
He has made his whole information in three distinct depositions. His first is of his manner of coming out of England and how he came to be joined with those knot of villains, as also what buccaneers one Captain Shelly brought over from Malagaskar ...
By what blind intelligence I have at present, this Captain Shelly has brought these buccaneers, which was to the number of eighty or ninety passengers from Malagaskar, was cleared from New York about ten months ago...
Turner has likewise given an account what buccaneers was at Malagaskar and their numbers.
  2. In 1883, Saleh bin Osman, a twelve-year-old boy from Zanzibar, found his way to Nosy Be, where he became the servant of rear-admiral Pierre and his wife. After the death of admiral Pierre in Marseille, Saleh was sent back to Zanzibar, where he became the servant of Stanley during Stanley's search for Emin Pasha. In his dictated memoirs, The Story of my Life, Saleh bin Osman consistently calls the great island Malagascar:
I run away and went to Malagascar; and all money I get I got 20 rupees in my pocket. When we 'rive to Malagascar, we stop at Noosbay...
This man Frenchman. He name Admirally Pierre. He fight in Malagascar...
And then she say "I want you teacher me Zanzibar language, and I want you learn Malagascar, because when Admirally go home he will want you interpreter"...
That all my story travel in Malagascar with Admirally ...
When Mis'r Stanley 'rive in Zanzibar, that maker me go with him in Africa because I think travel all same liker I travel in Malagascar.
  3. In 1903, Charles Basset wrote his doctoral thesis, Madagascar et l'oeuvre du général Galliéni, where he states on page 2:
If we listen to the statements of the natives, the real name of the island is Malagasikara (Malagascar) and not Madagasikara (Madagascar). They also point out that they are called Malagasy and not Madagasy.
