a species of prickly-pear commonly used for fences (Introduced (?) It is known in Mauritius as raquette. The fruit, rubbed over the soot of a rice-pot, is used as a substitute for blacking. Thorns of it in the flesh are removed by poulticing the part with the roasted fruit. Opuntia ferox. [Richardson 1885]
