  [Betsileo, Betsimisaraka, Merina] (du français : mangue ou de anglais : mango). Mangifera indica L. (Anacardiaceae). Le nom malgache désigne à la fois l'arbre, le manguier, et son fruit : la mangue. Outre des fruits qui fournissent un aliment apprécié et sont utilisés aussi pour faire des boissons alcooliques et de l'alcool, on a utilisé autrefois les noyaux, riches en tannin, pour préparer des encens ferro-tanniques (Grandidier). L'écorce est administrée en décoction aux malades atteints d'affections vénériennes ( akohofotsy et angatra) d'après Descheemaeker, Le bois du manguier est peu utilisé, on en fait cependant des mortiers pour décortiquer le riz, considérés comme peu solides, de basse qualité. Les Malgaches distinguent par des noms particuliers certaines variétés. La mangue ordinaire, dont la chair contient beaucoup de fibres, s'appelle manga vasoka, une variété à petits fruits sans fibres appelée manga vato est cultivée sur les hauts plateaux. La variété borabe encore dite « mangue auguste », à gros fruits sans fibres, excellente, doit être greffée sur manguier ordinaire et ne supporte que le climat de la côte. Elle est peu répandue. Il ne faut pas confondre avec ces noms, ceux qui désignent les mangues en fonction de leur degré de maturité. Les Tsimihety semblent avoir été les premiers à distinguer ces stades d'évolution qui sont :
° - gavoloha pour la mangue encore très verte consommée seulement macérée dans le vinaigre ou d'autres aromates,
° - menapina le stade suivant où l'on commence à la manger en nature,
° - betampano presque mûre,
° - masaka : mûre à point. [1.196]
